Grade 2's

The Grade 2's had design and make their own masks. This is part of their design & technology subject. First they had to draw their design in their books, work out how to attach all the different bits and come up with a final porduct. Very creative Grade 2's!

Spike the crab!

There was great excitement at school today when a large giant black crab appeared in the music room!! Spike (named by the grade 1's) caused a huge commotion for all the children. One of the grade 2's was heard saying "I want to see its scissors!". Everyone was delighted to be able to see the crab up close and personal as it tried to catch us with it's pincers!

The crab has been safely returned to the Keurebooms River this afternoon.

Fire Drill at Greenwood

Great excitement last Friday at Greenwood when we had our school fire drill test! A big siren alerted the children that there was a 'fire'. Everyone then went single file out to the soccer field. While role call the sirens of the fire engines came down the Ladywood Road. Three fire engines arrived at the field. The firemen were dressed in their very heavy, hot looking suits. They answered all the questions the Greenwood learners had and even showed them how the hose sprays water as well as foam! Everyone then took off their shoes and socks and had a turn to walk through the foam! Thank you so much to the Plett Fire Department who came out to Greenwood!

Grade 6/7 making bird baths

Making bird baths for art - a messy job what with mixing the concrete and smoothing it out over the steel and newspaper frames!
What a lot of fun!!

Mom and Dad
Mom and dad, along life's path,
Your love has shone the way.
For the guidance you give me,
I'm thankful every day.
You've always been the best parents;
I'm so grateful you're both mine;
deep in my heart, you'll always be
My favourite Valentine.

Gr R commmunity project outing

On Thursday, 17th Robyn's class went on an outing to the Theodora Crèche in New Horizon as part of their community project. And, as a "lifting mom", I was lucky enough to come along, enjoy and return with an eyewitness report:

On arrival our kids seemed excited and a little nervous at the same time but were put at ease immediately by the very warm welcome of the kids & teacher at Theodora Crèche. They sang their good morning song which sounded very happy and lovely. Then it was our boys turn to act out the narration (by Robyn) of the 3 little pigs and the 2 big bad wolfs. It really went well and seemed to be enjoyed by all present. (I can't say for Stacy but I always get a little weepy at these occasions.) After the wolfs decided to go vegan it was the girls turn to recite a poem in Afrikaans where Zoë was truly shining when saying "Ek se klein". With the recital under the belt it was time for singing a few songs in various languages where the crèche's kids joined in as well and then it was back to school time. All in all it was a lovely, successful outing. Well done, Robyn, Eunice and the kids!

The pics were taken with an old cell phone camera. My apologies as I came poorly equipped. Article by Saskia Fermor

It was a lovely misty cool morning when we arrived at Plettenberg Bay primary for the regional athletics (Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, and Sedgefield). Ben, Challenge, Papi and Rowan were cheerful and excited to be representing Greenwood. Wesley the new sports coach was encouraging and great at keeping the four focused when it was time. Mrs. Solomon stopped by to give good wishes to everyone. It was a bit of a wait as the longer races were first. Then it was the Greenwood children’s turn. They managed to place in 4 out of the 5 races! It was amazing to see our children from Greenwood participating and doing so well and how much they encouraged each other.

We are off to a very good start!!! 2011 has already moved into February and it is nearly Valentines Day!! How quickly is this year going already!!

Thank you to all our dedicated parents who came to the “Meet and Greet”. It means so much to your children and to us if you are involved in their school life. The evening was an informal way for parents to meet their child's teacher. Afterwards everyone gathered outside the office for snacks and drinks. A super way for us all to chat and get to know one another and meet all the new parents.

The school would not be the same without all the parents who have volunteered one way or another to help at school. This includes paired reading, lifting kids to the swimming pool, helping with sport, offering the school different things to make life easier ie fans and extension cords!!! Thank you - your help and support is amazing.

Greenwood has also been taking part in the Plett interschools athletics day. Our children were fabulous and a couple have been chosen to participate in another interschools sports day tomorrow - this includes schools from Knysna and Sedgefield. I would like to say welcome to Wesley Andrew who will be our Sport Coach. We hope Wesley and our children will have loads of fun together while training to be super sportschildren.

Please let me know if you have any news that I can add to the blog!
